In recent days, a short advertisement video featuring the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has appeared on several social media platforms. Messi is reportedly a sponsor of “Planet,” a movement aimed at reducing pollution worldwide.
The Planet video featuring Messi
As many of you may already know, Lionel Messi left France and PSG a few weeks ago to move to the United States, specifically to David Beckham’s Inter Miami. His new team has shared a short video on their official Twitter profile. At the beginning of the video, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is seen holding a small black box with the word “Pollution” written on it. Then, it shows how the environment improves without all the pollution, as if Messi’s kick to the black box removed the pollution from the planet. The initiative, therefore, seems undoubtedly very noble. But what exactly does Planet entail?
What is Planet?

On their official website, Planet defines itself as a movement that aims to use blockchain to address social and sustainability challenges, paving the way for a more transparent and sustainable future. They want to do this by combining the power of technology, the strength of community, and the support of major celebrities. According to their website, Planet is driven by the desire to help achieve the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations in September 2015 (which can be found here). The initiative is undoubtedly noble, but how do they intend to do this? The project has been around since early June, but as you can see from the photo, practically all sections of the site are blocked. At the time of writing this article, there is no white paper, roadmap, or even information about who makes up the team or who the founder of Planet is.
The Planet token

At present, the main focus of the project is the $PLANET token. At the time of writing this article, according to Coinmarketcap, it has reached a price of €0.00006068, with a market capitalization of €51.59 million. The trading volume in the last 24 hours is €11.46 million. The holders (people who hold $PLANETs) are 5932 At present, the $PLANET token can be purchased on Uniswap, PancakeSwap, MEXC, Gate.io, Bitget, BitMart, and Poloniex. On their Medium blog, Planet talks about some utility, such as bringing Real World Assets and tokenizing them on-chain. They talk about distributing income to holders, exclusive NFTs, Mystery Boxes, but there is nothing concrete at the moment.
A few days ago, 2.73 billion $PLANET were burned, so approximately 2,730,000,000 $PLANET. Now there are approximately 997,270,000,000 $PLANET available. The absence of real utility for the token in question, the constant rapid rise and fall in price, combined with the lack of a known team, a white paper, or even a simple roadmap, suggests, at present, a risk of scam. The presence of a well-known footballer like Messi among the sponsors of Planet is no guarantee of the safety of a Web3 project, as we recall Pogba with the Cryptodragons scam. We will investigate in more detail what Planet wants to do and will keep you updated in case of any other important news about Planet and its token.
